  • Light: Full sun. This tree performs poorly in shade and needs ample light to maintain its dense, healthy form.

  • Water: Keep soil moderately moist, especially while your tree is establishing. It prefers cool, consistently moist conditions and doesn't tolerate standing water or extended drought.

  • Space: Plan for a mature size of about 40 to 60 feet tall and 25 to 30 feet wide, so give it plenty of open space to grow into.

This tree has a shallow, spreading root system, so a 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch around the base helps regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. It prefers cooler summer climates and can struggle in hot, dry conditions.
