What’s included in a Treebute Kit?

Each Treebute Kit includes:

  • A healthy tribute tree in the size you select
  • A step-by-step planting and watering care guide
  • A personalized condolence and sympathy message

Optional add-ons to customize your kit:
A planter in your choice of style and size

  • A premium potting mix for indoor or patio planting
  • A cremation-safe organic soil blend (for ashes, if/when you're ready)

Many customers plant without ashes, and that's just as meaningful. Everything arrives together, ready to plant.

What is something meaningful I can send to a grieving friend?

A Treebute Kit is a heartfelt alternative to flowers. It is a gift that honors both grief and growth. It ships nationwide and includes everything needed to plant a tribute in the privacy of your own home.

Can I send this directly to someone as a gift?

Yes. We ship directly to them with a personalized message card from you. Many customers send trees to friends and family across the country. It is a meaningful way to show support when you cannot be there in person.

What if they're not ready to plant right away?

That is completely normal. The kit can sit for weeks or months until they are ready. Many customers plant on significant dates like birthdays or anniversaries. The tree waits for them, no pressure.

Is a memorial tree an appropriate sympathy gift?

Memorial trees are one of the most universally appreciated sympathy gifts. Unlike flowers that wilt or food that expires, a living tree offers lasting comfort and something to tend during grief. It is a safe, meaningful choice for any relationship.

What can I do with my pet's ashes?

Many people find comfort in creating a peaceful, lasting tribute with their pet's ashes. Treebute Kits help you do just that, by turning ashes into something living. It is a gentle ritual that brings comfort, connection, and healing. Treebute Kits are designed to work with all or some of your pet's cremation ashes. You decide what feels right.

What if I don't have my animal's ashes?

No ashes, no problem. Your love still grows. Treebute Kits are designed to honor the life of your beloved pet, with or without cremated remains. Whether you did not choose cremation, the ashes were not returned to you, or you simply want to honor your pet's memory symbolically, Treebute is still a perfect way to celebrate the love you shared.

Can I use this indoors?

Yes. Treebute Kits include several indoor-friendly tree options, making them ideal for apartments or homes without outdoor planting space.

How do I send a Treebute Kit to someone else?

During checkout, enter the recipient's name and shipping address. You can also add a personalized message, and we will include it with their kit. Please pay attention to any state shipping restrictions, which are listed on each product. For example, stone fruit trees such as apples, peaches, pears, plums, and cherries have restrictions for California. Contact us with any questions on state shipping restrictions and suggested alternatives. We want to help.

Can Treebute Kits be used with cremation ashes?

Yes. Treebute offers the option to add the Treebute® organic soil blend to your kit. It is specially formulated to safely mix with cremation ashes and offset their naturally high pH and sodium level, creating a nurturing foundation for tree growth. Your tree is meaningful with or without ashes. This is simply another way to honor someone you love.

Can I plant the tree without using ashes?

Of course. While Treebute Kits are cremation-friendly, you can plant them with or without ashes. It is a beautiful tribute either way.

What if they don't have ashes, or don't want to use them?

That is perfectly fine. Many people plant memorial trees without any ashes, and the tree is meaningful as a living tribute on its own. Our cremation-safe soil is an optional add-on for those who want it.

How often should I water a newly planted tree?

Water steadily, not too little and not too much, since both can harm a young tree. Keep the soil moist but not soggy through the first growing season while the roots establish. Let the top inch or two of soil begin to dry between waterings so the roots get the oxygen they need.

What if they've never planted anything before?

Our kits include simple, beginner-friendly instructions. Most customers complete planting in 30 to 60 minutes. The trees we select are hardy and forgiving.

Do I need gardening experience to use a Treebute Kit?

Not at all. Our kits are designed to be beginner-friendly, with clear, simple instructions and everything needed to get started. Planting a Treebute is a gentle, healing experience, no green thumb required.

Where should I plant my memorial tree?

Choose a spot with the conditions your tree needs to thrive. Look for steady sunlight through the day, soil you can loosen and improve, and ground that drains well so roots do not sit in water. Look up for power lines and down for buried utilities, and give the tree room to grow both above and below ground. The right tree in the right place needs less care and lives longer.

How long does shipping take?

Most orders ship within 2 to 3 business days and arrive within 5 to 7 business days. We will send tracking information as soon as your kit ships. If an item is marked Pre-Sell, it may have a different shipping date. This is typically the case for tropical trees and plants that need to wait until warmer spring months to ship.

What's your return policy?

We want you to be completely satisfied. If there's any issue with your tree, contact us within 30 days and we'll make it right.

What is the best soil for a memorial tree planted in a container?

A high-quality potting mix designed for trees or shrubs is best. Avoid heavy
garden soil, which compacts and traps water.

What makes Treebute different from other sympathy gifts?

Unlike flowers that fade, Treebute Kits grow into something lasting. They’re beautiful, meaningful, and giftable.

I wanted to create a Group Tree Gift but don't see how?

We are still offering our flagship full-service memorial Group Tree Gifts. Please reach out by email or phone to get started.

How do I know if a tree will survive in my area?

Every tree can handle a certain range of temperatures, described by its hardiness zone. Plant a tree suited to your region so it can weather your winters and summers. You can find your USDA hardiness zone by entering your ZIP code online.

How big should the planting hole be?

Dig a wide hole rather than a deep one. Tree roots spread out, not down, so loose, wide soil helps them establish. A good guide is a hole two to three times as wide as the root ball, and no deeper than the root ball itself, so the tree sits at the same depth it grew before.

What is the most common reason young trees die?

Most trees are not lost to pests or disease. They are lost to a handful of avoidable mistakes, such as overwatering, underwatering, compacted soil, and planting the wrong tree for the spot. A few good habits protect a young tree more than anything else

How do I start a new Treebute campaign?

Treebute's full-service group tree gifts are still available. Please contact us by phone or email with 'Group Tree Gift' in the subject line. To start a Group Tree Gift, we will need some information for the recipient and who the gift is in memory of.
