  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun brings out the densest, most uniform growth.

  • Water: Water deeply right after planting, then once or twice a week through the first growing season. Once established, it needs regular watering during extreme heat but is otherwise fairly self-sufficient.

  • Space: Plan for a mature size of about 15 to 20 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. In a container, its size will stay naturally more compact.

Little to no pruning is required to maintain its shape. If shaping is desired, do it in spring after new growth has begun, and avoid cutting into old or thick stems.
