Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple Treebute

A cascading tribute with deeply cut, garnet-red foliage that holds its color all season long.

The Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple is prized among laceleaf maples for its rich, deep red foliage, finely dissected leaves that hold their color through summer without fading, then deepen into a fiery crimson each fall. Its graceful, weeping branches cascade in layers, giving your tribute a soft, flowing presence in the landscape.

Each Treebute is a complete memorial tree kit designed to be planted at home, a hands-on ritual that many people find grounding and healing.

The act of planting gives your hands something purposeful to do and creates meaning, forming a living connection that continues to grow.

Nurturing Your Memorial Tribute

Even if you're new to planting, the Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple is a resilient, low-maintenance tree that holds its rich color through the heat of summer.

  • Light: Partial shade to full sun. Morning sun with some afternoon shade helps protect the foliage in hotter climates.

  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially while your tree is establishing. It prefers even moisture and well-drained, slightly acidic soil.

  • Space: Plan for a mature size of about 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide. Give its arching branches room to cascade outward.

This maple naturally maintains a rounded, weeping shape and needs very little pruning beyond removing dead or damaged growth. A layer of mulch helps protect its shallow roots and retain moisture.

Optional: Plant with Cremation Ashes - The Treebute® Difference

For those wishing to incorporate cremation ashes, your kit includes the option to add our Treebute® organic soil blend. This specially formulated mixture creates a safe, nurturing foundation for your tree - transforming ashes into living growth.

Your tree is meaningful with or without ashes - this is simply another way to honor someone you love.

What if they're not ready to plant right away?

The kit includes simple instructions to care for your tree until planting time. Many customers plant on a significant date, a birthday, an anniversary, or another day that feels right.

Is a Treebute Kit a good sympathy gift to send someone?

Yes. A living tree is a meaningful alternative to flowers that fade. It arrives ready to plant with a personalized message, so the person you are thinking of receives a tribute they can plant, tend, and watch grow.

What is included in a Treebute Kit?

Each kit includes a young, healthy Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple, a step by step planting and watering care guide, and a personalized memorial message. Everything arrives together in one kit, ready to plant. You can also add an optional planter, premium potting mix, or our cremation safe soil blend.

Can I grow the Inaba Shidare in a container or indoors?

The Inaba Shidare grows beautifully in a container on a patio or in the ground, and its compact, cascading form is well suited to pots. It is a deciduous tree that rests in winter and needs the natural turn of the seasons, so it is happiest outdoors rather than kept fully indoors.

How big does the Inaba Shidare get, and how long will it live?

The Inaba Shidare is a slow growing, small weeping maple. It commonly reaches about 6 to 10 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide at maturity, developing its graceful umbrella shape over many years. With good care it can flourish for decades.

Can I plant a memorial tree with cremation ashes?

Yes. Your kit offers the option to add our Treebute organic soil blend, formulated to mix safely with cremation ashes and offset their naturally high pH and sodium. Because this maple prefers slightly acidic soil, the blend is especially helpful here. It works for a person's or a pet's ashes.

Can I plant ashes without any special soil treatment?

We strongly advise against it and doing so will void the Warranty. Planting cremation ashes directly with a tree, without proper treatment, can stress or even kill the plant. The high sodium and pH levels create conditions that are hostile to root development. If you want your memorial tree to thrive for years to come, using the Treebute Organic Soil Blend is essential when incorporating ashes.

What makes Treebute different from other memorial tree options?

Treebute is designed to be planted at home, in your own yard, patio, or indoor space. Unlike distant memorial forests where a tree is planted somewhere you may never visit, a Treebute grows right where you can see it. It becomes a gentle, living presence in your daily life.

Every kit includes a healthy tree of your choice, clear planting and care instructions, and the option to add scientifically formulated soil for safe ash incorporation. And our team understands that every memorial is deeply personal.

How is this different from having a tree planted in a forest?

Forest donation programs plant something far away and send a card. A Treebute Kit delivers a real, living plant to your door, or to your recipient's door, so it can be planted and tended at home and seen every day. It becomes part of daily life, not a distant certificate.
