The Cold Hardy Avocado Tree is low-maintenance. Just find a sunny spot, give it occasional water, and watch it thrive. We'll provide a care guide to ensure your tree starts off on the right root.

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best growth and fruiting, whether grown indoors or outdoors.
  • Water: Water weekly during the first growing season, letting the soil dry out somewhat between waterings. Once established, it becomes drought tolerant and needs watering only during dry spells.

  • Space: Allow 15 to 20 feet of clearance for mature growth if planted in the ground, or a large container (at least 24 inches wide) if grown on a patio.

That's it: This tree is self-fertile, so it doesn't need a second tree nearby to bear fruit, and it's hardy down to about 20 degrees once established, making it more forgiving of cooler climates than a typical avocado tree.

How long until I get avocados?

Because this tree is grafted rather than grown from seed, it can begin bearing fruit in as little as three to four years, compared to a decade or more for a tree grown from a pit.

Is the avocado tree safe to have around pets?

The leaves, bark, skin, and pit contain a natural compound called persin. Dogs and cats are usually only mildly affected, typically some stomach upset, though a swallowed pit can pose a choking or blockage risk. Birds, rabbits, horses, and livestock are considerably more sensitive and should not have access to any part of the plant. Plan your tree's placement accordingly if you have pets at home.

Can I grow the Cold Hardy Avocado indoors?

Yes, especially in cooler climates. Many growers keep it in a container outdoors during the warmer months, then move it to a bright indoor spot once nights turn cold. It needs plenty of direct light to thrive, so a sunny window or grow light works best indoors.
